Where Hearts are Heard
Community Garden Peoples UMC is the sponsor of a community garden on the grounds of the church. The Oregon Community Garden is sponsored by PUMC, and we receive advice and support from the Community Action Coalition of South Central Wisconsin, the organization that sponsors many of the community gardens in Dane County. This beautiful new garden shed was erected June 7th to serve the Oregon community garden. The shed was constructed by the Construction Explorations class at Oregon High School, under the supervision of teacher Chris Tourdot. The shed was paid for with start-up funds received from the Community Action Coalition and the Madison Community Foundation. Boettcher's towing donated their services to move the shed from the high school to the garden site. Some foundation plantings will be added around the shed. The PUMC Soul Gardeners will be able to share the space in the shed for tool storage.
The garden is a project of the Living Our Faith group. Plots are available to anyone - you do not need to be a member/attender of the church. If you have questions contact Barbara Feeney at 843.2272. Click for a registration form in english or spanish.
Plots will be assigned in April 2010. As soon as you are assigned your plot, you can begin planting. If you are new to gardening, we suggest that you start with a half-plot. The plots are 18 feet x 18 feet - that is quite large and the size could be overwhelming if you are new to gardening! The fees are halved for those who take half plots.
The garden is no-till; however, in the Spring of 2010, we will likely rent a small tiller for a half-day for those who would like to till their plot. Gardeners will be responsible for managing their own plots. Gardeners who return to garden the next year will be assigned the same plot, so you will benefit from any efforts you make to impove your plot year after year. The garden is organic, and we will offer advice on methods you can use to help control weeds and pests.
Plot rental fees for the Oregon Community Garden will be the same as the fees used by the community gardens sponsored by the CAC. The fees are used to cover the costs of tilling, water, provision of tools, copying and mailings, etc. Please see the fee chart below.
If you would like to assist this effort by donating time, tools, Spanish translation/interpretation skills, or in any other way, please contact Barbara Feeney at 843.2272.
